From the Benedictine abbey to the Little Venice of Languedoc
The history of Castres dates back to the 9th century, when the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Benoît was founded on the banks of the Agout River. A major stop on the Way of Saint James, the town has preserved an exceptional architectural heritage that bears witness to its glorious past.
Castres was born in the 9th century around the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Benoît, founded on the banks of the Agout. Around 855 AD, the relics of Saint Vincent of Saragossa were brought here, making Castres an important stop on the Via Tolosana, one of the four French routes to Santiago de Compostela. The abbey attracted pilgrims and worshippers, giving rise to a prosperous town that developed along the river.
Thanks to the relics of Saint Vincent of Saragossa, Castres became an essential stop on the Via Tolosana, the Way of Saint James that crosses Languedoc. Pilgrims crossed the Agout and paid their respects at the abbey before continuing their journey to Spain. This strategic position fostered the town's economic and cultural development during the Middle Ages.
From the late 12th century onwards, tanners, weavers and papermakers settled on the banks of the Agout. They built half-timbered, corbelled houses whose colourful facades are reflected in the river. The water of the Agout was essential for processing hides, wool, leather and paper. These trades shaped Castres' identity and left behind an architectural heritage unique in France.
The view from Quai Tourcaudière and Quai des Jacobins offers an exceptional panorama of these colourful houses mirrored in the Agout. It is this singularity that earned Castres the nickname 'Little Venice of Languedoc'. The half-timbered facades, the pastel tones reflected in the water and the regular alignment of the buildings create a tableau of rare harmony.
